Improving Your Child's Reading Level

A child’s reading level can determine their ability to learn new skills and their eligibility for educational and career opportunities. The Tutoring Center, League City knows how important a child’s reading level is and has some activities you can do at home to improve your child's reading proficiency.

Learning in the Kitchen

Each time that a child reads on their own and encounters a new word they will attempt to sound out the letters to create the word. However, as great as this technique is, it can be limited by a child’s exposure to a range of letter-sound combinations. Instead of your children playing video games or watching TV while you prepare dinner, invite them into the kitchen to help and for a small reading lesson.
  • When using a recipe, ask your children to read it aloud and follow along.
  • If you are using pre-prepared ingredients, ask your children to read the ingredients and nutritional information aloud to you.
Of course, the words your child reads are not going to form part of their lexicon. However, the lesson isn’t in learning new words, it’s about learning new letter-sound combinations which they otherwise wouldn’t encounter in class. This activity can help children learn new words correctly when reading alone.
