Teaching over the Summer Break

In addition to the grades which your child achieved, their end of year report card also contains a multitude of information from their teachers about learning challenges experienced throughout the previous school year and information to help prepare for the next. The Tutoring Center of League City has more on the topic, below.

Find a Theme

Sit down and read their teacher’s notes carefully to identify a common theme. For example, is a student struggled when it came time to present their work to the class then you can expect multiple comments from teachers on the matter. Continuing with this example, here are some great activities:
  • Copy pages and paragraphs from last school year’s textbooks and notebooks and use them as part of a reward system. For example, if your child needs a ride to the mall to see their friends, ask them to first read aloud to the family a page or paragraph.
  • Reading your mail aloud as you drive or cook dinner both provides a chance for your student to improve their public speaking and for you to monitor their progress.
  • Reading aloud short non-educational stories to the family each night helps to promote a positive connection between your child and reading.
Of course, if your child’s challenge was in a different area, adapt these tips or create your own great ways to introduce small instances of learning into their summer days.
